What’s the Difference Between Series A and Series B Flanges?

ASME B 16.47 is one of the American standards. It refers to one of the large-diameter steel flanges. The standard also covers the requirements about flange joint, flange bolting, flange gaskets, etc. In addition, the standard covers the design of flanges from NPS 60 to NPS 24.


With the rating classifications 900, 600, 400, 300, 150, and 75, the standard ASME B 16.47 offers measurement, dimensions, marking, tolerances, and pressure temperature for the pipe flanges. ASME B16.47 standard comes in two series, Series B and Series A flanges. The differences between these flanges are:

Characteristics

ASME B16.47 Series A flanges are relatively thicker, heavier, and more robust than Series B flanges with the same size and pressure ratings. Hence, series A flanges can withstand extra external loading compared to the Series B flanges.

Required Fasteners

The fastener quality requirement for ASME B16.47 Series A flanges is lesser than the Series A. Class 150 Series A flange requires 28 bolts of 1-1/4 inch diameter for installation. Therefore, the total number of fasteners for ASME B16.47 Series B flanges is higher when compared with Series A. Class 150 Series B flange needs 44 bolts with a diameter of ¾ inches for the installation. The smaller bolt circle width affects the flange movement after installation.

Types

Series B and Series A standards include blind flanges and weld neck flanges in raised face type (RF). However, Series A illustrates ring-type joint (RTJ) flanges with the different classes from Class 900 to Class 300

Cost

ASME B16.47 Series A flange costs more than ASME B16.47 Series B flanges.

Use

Series A flanges are perfect for the new connections or pipelines for many piping end users. Series B flanges are perfect for replacement or refurbishment work and non-critical piping applications. In industry, Series A flanges suit all the complex applications. However, Series B flanges suit only easy applications.

Flange weight

ASME B16.47 Series A flanges are heavier. Hence, it can also exert more extra weight on piping supports. On the other hand, the weight of the ASME B16.47 Series B flanges is comparatively less and may not sustain high loads.
