When Do We Use Slip-On Flange, A Weld Neck Flange Or A Lap Joint Flange

There are few types of flanges, but the most used types by ASME B16.5 are weld neck, slip-on, and lap joint flange.

Weld Neck Flange



These are easy to recognize at the long tapered hub. It goes gradually over to the thickness of the wall from a fitting or pipe. The long tapered hub provides an essential reinforcement for use in several applications that involve elevated, sub-zero temperatures or high pressure. The smooth transition from fitting or pipe wall thickness to flange thickness gets affected by the taper and is extremely beneficial under the conditions of repeated bending caused by the line expansion or other variable forces.
 

Slip-on Flange



The calculated strength from a slip-on flange under internal pressure is of around two-thirds of the Welding Neck flanges, and their life under fatigue is about one-third that of the latter.

The connection with the pipe is about 2 fillet welds, as well at the outside as also at the inside of the flange.

Lap Joint Flange

Lap Joint Flanges have all the same common dimensions as other flanges. They are used in conjunction with a ‘Lap joint stub end’. Lap joint flanges are nearly identical to the Slip-on flange with an exception of the radius at the intersection of the flange face and the bore to accommodate the flanged portion of the Stub end.


If you are thinking about when to use a lap joint, weld neck, or a slip-on flange, the answer to this question is mixed. First, the piping material engineer must make it clear about the type of flanges to be included in each line class specification.

The piping material specifications must not include every flange type in every line class. If lap joints are the flanges called for by the line class, you may only use lap joint flanges. For other line classes, you would usually use only weld neck flanges for all flange situations for 3” (NPS) and larger. The usage of a slip-on flange could be the only exception here when there is a space limitation problem.
