Stepping Into Flanges

The flange is one of the essential components required to connect two pipes. It helps in connecting the ends of two pipes through welding or threading. Flanges are classified into two main categories as per the attended modes: welded and threaded flanges

When you want to connect two pipes, you’ll need a pair of flanges, a gasket, and several nuts and bolts to complete the flange joint. First, put the gasket between the two sealing faces and then tighten the bolt. When the gasket surface pressure reaches a certain level, it deforms to fill the uneven parts of the sealing surface to achieve the perfect leak tightness.

A flange joint is usually a detachable link. It means the detachable components are divided into tube flanges and containers. If we look from the perspective of structure types, they are threaded, loose, and integral flanges. Butt and flat welding flanges are two general types of integral flanges. Flat welding flanges are applicable for working pressure with less than 4Mpa for its inferior stiffness. The butt welding flange is the opposite kind. You can apply it to the commonly working circumstances with pressure and high temperature for its superior stiffness.

Different flanges hold their media and tolerate pressure. The gasket used in the joint determines a lot. The gaskets of many types are acquired from the non-metallic plates. You can even specify a few with the size received from asbestos rubber sheets, polyethylene sheets, and much more.

Flanges usually hold their standard system. They are JIS, ANSI, and DIN systems. The DIN and ANSI systems contain laws for basic pressure levels and sealing face types, and the JIS is not widely accepted. Furthermore, the production of flanges must happen under the rules like GB standard, pressure vessels standard, mechanical standard, and chemical standard.

As the technologies keep developing, it is best to develop much more competitive flange types. We hope this article will help you out to get some general knowledge about flanges.
